2019 Whatcom County Fire District No. 7 Bond Issue Information Prop-3.
Over the next few weeks, we will provide information about the requested funds and what they will accomplish.
This weeks feature is not quite as exciting as the vehicles, however it is even more important to fire fighters when it comes to entering toxic atmospheres. These are the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) that fire fighters wear when going into hazardous situations. These provide breathing air so that our crews can operate safely in areas where there is not enough air to sustain life.
These breathing apparatus were purchased in 2004 and are currently 15 years old. The tanks that carry the air are now at their life limit. We have attempted to attain federal grants to purchase new SCBA over the last 3 years but have been unsuccessful in our attempts. This equipment is vital to the health and safety of our fire fighters and the public as well. Without these, we would not be able to enter burning building to attempt rescue or to efficiently put the fire out.
The District has 75 of these important pieces of equipment that need to be replaced next year (2020) and at $8000.00 each, the total cost for this project is $600,000.
When the project is complete these SCBA’s should serve the community for the next 15 years.
